23 – ITALY

The Swiss Alps were hidden in dark clouds. As Mrs S and Joe sped through them they were also maneuvering through the mountains of unresolved tension that lay between them. Inside and outside the Land Rover, they seemed to be heading closer and closer to an electric storm.

It did not help that Mrs S was convinced Rintner had destroyed parts of her brain. It was a temporary obsession that reduced everything else to paranoid confusions. Her sentences trailed off without being finished; she constantly adjusted the heating up and down; she kept touching her face and neck and asking Joe to repeat what he said.

“All they did was put a few stupid suggestions in your head,” said Joe. “I’m sick of hearing about it.”

“I don’t want to get old and fat before my time, that’s all.”

“Then you won’t, will you,” said Joe angrily.

“It’s easy for you. You didn’t have dozens of electric things stuck in your head. I’m going to die of some horrible disease.” She lit up the last cigarette of her second pack of the journey.

“So will I, if you keep smoking like that. I tell you, no one can hypnotize you into doing what you don’t want to do. You saw the tape. You know what Rintner said, so you can ignore it now. Get yourself back under control.”

“Well, I keep feeling hungry,” she said.

“Evelyn used that same equipment on me all the time.”

“The bitch. It was her put you up to all this, wasn’t it?”

“Up to all what? You tell me what she did?”

“Leave it out, Joe. I haven’t got the stomach for it. She planned it all, didn’t she, her and that Arab?”

“You were the one with the immaculate game plan. And when Al-Buseidy screwed it all up for you, you got nasty, didn’t you?”

“I didn’t have much choice, did I?”

“Of course you did. I’ll never forgive you for what happened to Andy. Never.” Joe had said it at last.

Mrs S tried to stub her cigarette out, but the ashtray was already too full. She wound the window down and threw the cigarette out and the empty pack with it. She ignored the look in Joe’s eye. “They could do with some decent litter here,” she said. “All this fresh air and fucking clean roads, it’s not natural.” She stuck her head out of the window and shook her head into the unnatural mountain air. By the time the window was up again her mood had changed.

“Joe, love. I want to know what hold you lot have got over Rintner.”

“I wouldn’t know. They’re not ‘my lot’.”

“Don’t you try to mess with my head too. I saw the way Rintner was all over you; Christ, he was licking your arse like a woofter’s poodle.”

“I keep telling you, you know more about what’s going on than I do.”

“You made a fool of me for a whole year, Joe. Not anymore. Rintner had all those studs standing there, didn’t he? With more shooters on ’em than bollocks.
